Riverlea Jack makes big impression in Perth

NZPA-AAP Perth The erratic Victorian pacer, Riverlea Jack, is the big shortener for the 1989 Golden West InterDominion Pacing Championship starting at Gloucester Park in Perth, on Friday night. The six-year-old had an easy win over 2100 m at Gloucester Park on Monday, recording a mile rate of 1:57.7, only 0.1 seconds slower than Village Kid recorded in winning last Friday night. The leading bookmaker, Ross Cooper, was so impressed with Riverlea Jack’s winning effort he slashed his price from 101 to 7-1. “You had to have been impressed by his man-

ners, and also the ease in which he raced away in the straight,” Cooper said.

The John McLeantrained pacer was earlier placed out of the draw by stewards, and banned from racing for 28 days after his most recent Melbourne start.

Monday’s smooth, and well-mannered performance now gets him back into the draw for the first set of heats over 1700 m on Friday. Village Kid showed he has returned in fine fettle with a tough staying win over a smart field of performers.

The Bill Horn-trained eight-year-old won by 10m from Morgan James after racing three wide,

Driven by regular reinsman Chris Lewis, the millionaire pacer looked fighting fit, and showed by the ease of his victory he will take a power of beating in his search for a second Inter-Dominion title.

"Chris Lewis said the horse felt terrific in the run, and he’s on target for another serious crack at the championship,” Horn said.

“He’s done it all before, so there’s no reason why he can’t do it again,” he said.

Astute punters took the 7-1 on offer about Village Kid winning the sAust69o,ooo champion-

sjiip before Friday night’s victory and Cooper quickly tightened him in the market to 5-1, a luxury price for such a champion performer. Sunday saw the arrival of eight interstate and New Zealand candidates foir the series after a trip delayed nine hours, from Melbourne!.

The Bob Knight-trained trio Our Maestro, Sinbad Bay and '.Sir Reilly were jointed by Rufus Young Blood, Kairl Thomas, and the i New Zealand Luxury Liner, Tax Credit and Kylie’s Hero. With the support for Riverlea Jack and Village Kid, Sinbad Bay has eased out to a 2-1 favourite, after at one stage being 6-
