Stipendiary steward appointment announced
PA Invercargill A former successful jockey, Mike Lawson, has been appointed an assistant resident Southland stipendiary steward to the New Zealand Racing Conference. Mr Lawson will assist senior Otago resident stipendiary steward, John Hunter, and his Otago assistant at all Southland meetings.
Born in England, Mr Lawson launched his career in New Zealand racing when he became indentured to Jock Hobbs, an Oamaru trainer. He completed his apprenticeship with Bill Hillis, at Simper Lodge, Riverton. In all he rode more than 200 winners, and later trained for 12 years. i
