City development
Sir, —Congratulations to the Christchurch City Council on their first urban design perspec-
tive. It is quite right that a longterm view be taken of how a city should develop — especially a city as attractive as Christchurch. Of particular note is the new “Heritage Area” bordered by Lichfield, St Asaph, Madras and Manchester Streets. This lovely collection of older buildings must be retained. It is a fascinating area which could be made into something very special, if developed along the right lines. Sydney has done it with The Rocks and the Queen Victoria Building. There is no reason why our heritage area should not be just as exciting. Too many of our grand old buildings are disappearing.— Yours, etc., JOCELYN DAVISON. February 22, 1989.
