Westland forests
Sir,—lt was sad that the Westland County Council supported the sawmilling Industry’s call for the covenants over Saltwater and Okarito forests to be revoked so that the forests can be clearfelled. Councillors would have done better explaining the situation to their ratepayers to allow more informed debate. The choice in South Westland is whether to manage the two forests for future generations or plunder them for a few easy dollars. The reactionary attitude shown by councillors plays into the hands of the conservation movement, giving it carte blanche to abandon previous concessions and push for more reserves. It should also sound a warning to those in Government who want regions to take greater responsibility for resources. Natural forests are far too important to be at the mercy of small-town politicians who are ignorant of forestry principles and cannot, or will not, see the wider implications of their actions. — Yours, etc., I. L. JAMES. February 19,1989.
