Hut charges
Sir,—l recently spent a night in the Ada Hut on the St James walkway. The hut is classed as Group 2 and, according to the list of facilities available, a water supply has been laid on. The only water supply I could see was the nearby creek; fancy being charged for that. The point of my letter is that although we stayed overnight in the Ada we met no other trampers, and from the logbook in the hut it would appear that patronage of the track has fallen off. Several groups, apparently of younger age, stated that they could not afford the fees ($8 a night) in the Ada. I believe we should encourage our younger people to tramp and charging them for - - --------
huts is not on. Surely it is better that they develop some skills in tramping rather than spending their time around the towns. I wonder if Sir Edmund Hillary would have made it to Everest under the present system of user-pays. Charges for huts are not on. The system of collecting revenue is open to abuse and must cost extra to operate. — Yours, etc., L. SPARKS. February 20, 1989.
