New frigates
Sir, —Seventy-five per cent of New Zealanders do not want the Gbyfefnment toftspend $2 billion over; 20 years,,on four unwarranted frigates. Yet the Government appears Th be yielding to pressure from other governments, and probably from large commercial interests. At a time when there is ho perceived threat to our security we are being asked to spend colossal sums of the people’s money to provide protection for larger ships of the American and Australian navies. It does not make sense. If we have that much money-let us provide more employment, housing, better education and health services. We could do that and at the same time build ships that would be cheaper to. construct and to run for the protection of our resources, and to assist in disaster relief anywhere in the south Pacific. — Yours, etc., OLWEN PALMER.
