Attempt to save jobs
The Lyttelton engineering firm, Sinclair and Melbourne, will be restructured to try to avoid redundancies within the company. Members of the Canterbury Engineers’ Union, Boilermakers’ Union and Shipwrights’ Union met directors of the company yesterday. The secretary of the engineers’ union, Mr Bob Todd, said there would be no immediate redundancies at the company.
"They are to go through a restructuring exercise and will actively seek more work,” he said. Mr Todd said the unions were pleased that the company had been able to pull back on any redundancies. “I believe there is a potential in the port for a , large ship repair and maintenance base. The unions will meet the company again in a month.
