Terminal still out of action

The container terminal at Lyttelton remained out of action again yesterday after watersiders refused to return to work.

Watersiders working the terminal were put off pay on Tuesday when they went on strike over an agreement between the Lyttelton Port Company and their employees, members of the Harbour Workers’ Union. Two vessels which were to have berthed at the

terminal yesterday, the Wellington Maru and the California Star, anchored off Lyttelton Heads rather than sail into port. The Lyttelton Port Company’s cargo services manager, Mr Peter Rea, said the company had asked the watersiders to go back to work but the offer had been refused. Mr Rea said an effortwas being made to have the matter dealt with by port conciliation.
