‘Profound regret’ at resignation
The president of the National Party, Mr Neville Young, said that the resignation of the secretary-general, Mr Max Bradford, had been accepted “with profound regret by the national executive,” and that a settlement of the terms of Mr Bradford’s departure was now being negotiated. “I am absolutely furious at the leaks that have been involved in this exercise,” he said. “When party people at senior level decide they are going to talk to the media about the private matters of the party it is
destructive of the party. “With National 17 points ahead in the polls we have everything going for us as a political party,” Mr Young said. “Leaks such as this make the job of a president almost impossible.” Mr Bradford’s departure and its circumstances were greeted with glee by the Labour Government. “I want to thank the National Party for racing to our rescue once again,” said the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, breaking into.. Opposition criticism of the Government’s handling of the Bank of New Zealand.
