Man returns voluntarily
NZPA Sydney Extradition proceedings against a Christchurch man were cancelled in a Sydney court yesterday, when he agreed to fly back to Christchurch voluntarily, a police spokesman said. The New Zealand police were to have sought an extradition order against Paul Robert George Fleetwood, aged 39, who faces fraud charges in Christchurch. Instead he boarded a plane from Sydney to Christchurch yesterday afternoon.
He had been arrested in Sydney last September and charged with separate fraud offences involving about sAust4o,ooo ($53,000).- After pleading guilty he was sentenced to community work. If he had unsuccessfully opposed his extradition in court yesterday, under Australia’s new extradition laws he faced a fortnight in prison before being allowed to leave the country. The Christchurch police were unable to confirm Fleetwood’s arrival last evening.
