Space shortage for bone unit
A bone-marrow transplant unit in Canterbury has been delayed because the Canterbury Hospital Board cannot find the space for it.
Plans for a bonemarrow transplant unit at Christchurch Hospital have been underway for some time. In* November last year the board was given a service development grant of $501,000 to set it up. However, the board is having difficulty finding space for the unit without losing other specialty beds in Christchurch Hospital. A board member, Dr Jocelyn Hay, yesterday expressed concern that the unit was “in limbo.” The medical superin-tendent-in-chief, Dr Ross Fairgray, said alternative .sites were still being looked at and would be discussed in the ,incommittee section of the meeting. “It’s not that simple and it will raise some curly problems for the board,” he said.
