Watersiders put off pay at port

By

PAM MORTON

Watersiders at Lyttelton were put off pay yesterday after refusing to work the container terminal at the port. Union members went on strike over an agreement between the Lyttelton Port Company and their employees, members of the Harbour Workers’ Union. The company’s cargo services manager, Mr Peter Rae, said the watersiders had objected to the flexibility the company had in using employees. Where there were shortages on occasions,

labour was provided voluntarily on a flexible basis. Mr Rae said this was the first time the watersiders had gone on strike over the issue although it had been in practice for some time. “We believe it should be discussed rather than have a gun put to our head. “The negotiations should be between the Port Company and its employees.” Two container vessels the Wellington Maru and the California Star are due in Lyttelton today.
