Crash charges still undecided

A decision on whether to prosecute those involved in the crash between a police patrol car and a Mini might not be made for up to six weeks, said the district superintendent of the Christchurch Ministry of Transport, yesterday. Superintendent Ray Hall said a decision would be made before the inquest into the deaths of the three young Christchurch men who died in the accident on Sunday. “There is still a lot of work to do,” he said.

The Ministry is awaiting results of post-mortem examinations and forensic tests by the D.S.I.R. The results of the postmortems could take up to six weeks, said Mr Hall. The Ministry is continuing its investigation and hoped for further help from any witnesses. Mr Hall said publicity about a jogger who may have seen the accident, which occurred at 2.15 a.m. at the junction of Madras and Winton streets, had brought no response.
