Strong team in surfing
Canterbury will field one of its strongest all-round surf lifesaving teams for years when it seeks to retain overall honours at the Westpac national championships next month. The selectors, Daryl Neate (coach) and Russell W’ard, have named a maximum squad Of 42 — 23 of them from South Brighton, bolstered by 10 surf boat racers — with an encouraging spread of depth and potential. This particularly applies to the junior section, with most of the boat crew and five others not finishing, their junior careers this season. Neate is also deploying a wide range of specialists to assist him. While Dave East is the over-all manager, he has sectional assistants in Paul Carpinter (women), Mike Regan (junior) and Trevor Graham (open), with Ward, Russell Forster and Geoff Le Cren assisting in the coaching. There are 11 new district representatives in the team, which is:—
