Kakapo search by ‘Hitchhiker’s’ author

PA Wellington A British author, Douglas Adams, who wrote “Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” arrives in New Zealand today to find a kakapo. Adams has teamed with a zoologist, Mark Carwardine, on a project which has so far taken them to Indonesia to look for komodo dragons, Mauritius to seek Uie Rodrigues fruit bat, China for Yangtze River dolphins, and Chile for Juan Fernandez fur seals, j They also went looking for white rhinos in Zaire. They are preparing a book and a series of seven 30minute radio programmes for the 8.8. C. I Each programme and book chapter will tell the story of a mini-expedition to search for a rare or endangered animal. Their aim is to reach an audience that would not normally be interested in wildlife and conservation. They fly Auckland today and will be guests .of the Conservation Department. They will visit Little Barrier Island early next week and Kapiti Island before flying to Invercargill for a visit to Codfish Island, where kakapo are being established'
