Large yarding of ewes at Culverden

Buyers faced one of the largest yardings at the Culverden ewe fair yesterday. The numbers were well in excess of last year’s small sale, which was down because of an extra sale in January, but were also higher than sales for several years preceding that. Buyers were restrained in their bidding and prices for comparable stock were below those recorded at Thursday’s fair at Hawarden.

Only a few vendors were able to get more than $25 for their two-tooth ewes. H. R. Hammond, of Culverden, topped the sale with Romneys at $29. The top price at last year’s sale was $3l. The estate of A. W. B. McMillan, of Culverden, sold Corriedales at $28.25 and $27.50. A. S. and B. R. Black, Culverden, sold a pen of Corriedales at $26, and the Auchtercairn Farm, Culverden, had a sale at $25.25. Other good two-tooths sold at $2O to $25 with light and medium stock making $l4 to $l9. Only one vendor was able to clear $2O or more in the large adult section. Nukawai Partnership, of Culverden, sold annual draft pre-lamb shorn Corriedales at $23.75 and $2O. The top price for adults last year was $26. Other stronger sales for adults yesterday were made by the Glens of Tekoa Estate, Culverden, with annual draft Halfbreds at $lB, $16.75 and $16.25. A. S. and B. R. Black sold four-year Corriedales at $17.50, S. G. Smith, of Culverden, sold a pen of three-shear Borderdales at $16.25, and D. H. Grigg, of Rotherham, sold annual draft Corriedales at $l6. ' Medium-weight early-shorn Corriedales and Halfbreds sold at $ll to $l3 with lighter Halfbreds at $8 to $lO. Later-shorn ewes again attracted works prices, only selling at $8 to $lO for better stock and $5 to $6 for very light ewes. The better lamb prices for the fair were recorded by Westhaven Partnership, of Culverden, with ewes at $14.50, and the Glens of Tekoa with Halfbred wethers at $14.25.
