New sponsor for Cup carnival

The final day of the 1989 Melbourne Cup carnival has been given a name change and will be known as Honda Stakes Day. Honda Australia, Ltd, will sponsor the day’s feature race which has been changed from the Ampol Stakes. Ampol sponsored the event up to last year when it was won by Westminster. With the name change comes a sAust2s,ooo lift in stakes for the 1600 m event, which will now be worth $275,000. It is the third sponsorship of the race which was originally known as the George Adams Handicap until 1984.
Other winners of the prestigious race include Aquanita (1960-61), Vain (1969), Gunsynd (1970), Galway Bay (1977), Family Of Man (1978), Silver Bounty (1980), Magari (1981) and Riverdale (1984). As part of the deal Honda will also sponsor a two-race series for mares .starting with the sAustso,ooo Honda Prelude (1400 m on October 7.
The first four race placegetters will be eligible to win for their connections a Honda Prelude, valued at around sAust7o,ooo, as a bonus if they can take out the sAustso,ooo Honda Legend (1600 m on Melbourne Cup Day.
