Fishing boat sinks The gutted Japanese fishing boat Sankichi Maru No 18 has sunk off the Northland coast. The vessel sank on Monday, about 300 nautical miles west of Dargaville, 11 days after it caught fire, resulting in the death of one crewman whose body was found in the ship. Fifteen crewmen and an inflatable liferaft remain missing. Engineering post The new president of the Institution of Professional Engineers is Mr Doug Ritchie, of Wellington. Mr Ritchie succeeds Professor Dick Earle. He was vicepresident in 1987/88. Born in 1937, Mr Ritchie graduated from Canterbury University in 1954. He joined Cable-Price Corporation in 1960, retiring last year after 14 years as managing director. Mr Ritchie is now a director on the boards of the Electricity Corporation, its subsidiary, Power Design Build, and the AMP Society. Awards received Two. Christchurch engineers have received awards at the annual Institution of Professional Engineers’ conference, in Dunedin this week. Professor L. Erasmus was awarded the institution’s prestigious Angus Award for his 1988 paper, “Seismic Energy Dissipation with Ring-Springs.” Mr M. Gadd received the Rabone Award for his study into physical traffic restraint measures, published in 1987. Doctor fined A Rotorua doctor’s misconduct over the forceps delivery of a difficult breach birth has resulted in his being fined by the Medical Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee. Dr David William Acton Rodwell should have delivered the baby by caesarean section, the committee found at an October 20 inquiry. It censured Dr Rodwell, fined him $4OO, and ordered him to pay inquiry costs of $4660. The baby suffered permanent paralysis of the upper left arm.—PA. “Buy N.Z.” campaign . Woolworths and Deka are joining their rival food chain, Foodtowh, in the “Buy New Zealand” campaign. Both companies have paid to join the month-old campaign, and organisers say they are targeting big businesses and retailers.to strengthen support. :
