Juniors off to Sweden?
New Zealand Tennis Incorporated is pursuing the possibility of sending an undisclosed number of junior players to Sweden to further their careers this year. Simon Allatson, the executive director of New Zealand Tennis, confirmed that negotiations were in progress but that it was too soon to make any formal announcements. “We are pursuing the possibility of assisting one or more
players in 1989 to aid their development,” he said. "Kevin Woolcott, the former national junior coach, has established some useful contacts in Sweden, but we will follow up preliminary studies to ensure that this venture is in the best interests of the players.” A New Zealand junior team comprising Alistair Hunt (Canterbury), Troy Tipene (North Shore) and Michael Zorocich (Auckland) will play
four tests against a threesome from Sweden in Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland from February 1. The Swedish team to tour is Robert Ericsson, Federick Hormell and Brame Johansson. All three Swedish players are ranked nationally in the top 10 and have been competing in the Australian junior Open along with Hunt, Trail, Zorocich, Brendon Furness and Tipene.
