Canty cyclists selected
Two Canterbury cyclists, Brian Fowler and Chris Nicholson, have been selected in the New Zealand team to race the Milk Race cycling tour in Britain in May and June. Six riders were presented to a New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association meeting at the week-end and the team was approved subject to the appointment of a suitable manager. Selectors have included a mixture of experience and youth in the team. Stephen
Cox, who has reappeared in the national cycling scene in the last year has been named along with Nicholson, who proved his worth in racing in New Caledonia, Tasmania and New Zealand tours last year. Cox, of Waikato, BOP, has ridden the Milk Race before and Nicholson has not. It will also be the first time in the 13-day tour for Fowler. Two other riders, from last year’s team to the tour, will return to Britain. They are Gavin Stevens, of Auckland
and Tom Bamford, of Waikato. The New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association has called for applications for the position of manager for the team, but as yet none has been received. The team is: Tom Bamford (Waikato, Bay of Plenty), Stephen Cox (Waikato, Bay of Plenty), Brian Fowler (Canterbury), Mike Griffiths (Auckland), Chris Nicholson (Canterbury), Gavin Stevens (Auckland).
