Tax on students

Sir, —Amidst the current debate concerning student loans and graduate tax we should not overlook yet another blow the Government has dealt students — taxes. From 1989, the basic student allowance will be taxed at 24c in each dollar and any supplementary income at the rate of 28c in each dollar. It is necessary for many students to work part-time during term, and obviously these students are being disadvantaged. What initially seemed an attractive student allowance package is merely a devious scheme to collect more revenue for the Government, forcing many students to reconsider their future at tertiary institutions. What a sorry state tertiary education is in. If that is not all, the Government looks set to introduce another revenue-collecting scheme — a further disincentive for students. So much for equal opportunity in education. Surely, only the wealthy can now afford a tertiary qualification.—Yours, etc. DAVID CHILDS. January 26, 1989.
