State-owned enterprises
Sir,—Sam Stewart (January 19) has neatly encapsulated the State-owned enterprises discussion. It is, indeed, the monopolistic situation of these former Government departments which really requires deregulation. If the public can be stirred into demanding a referendum on the matter, so much the better. To exchange an inefficient State-run monopoly for a more efficient corporate-run monopoly is merely political sleight of hand which only serves to strengthen the oligarchical situation already in existence in New Zealand. — Yours, etc., JOHN FRANCIS. January 20, 1989.
