Board to help Wgtn lobby over deregulation
The Christchurch Transport Board will throw its weight behind a Wellington City move to have impending transport deregulation changed to ensure bus companies get a good deal. The board yesterday decided that the chairman, Mr Pat Neary, should liaise with the Wellington City Council in a move to lobby the Government over trans-
port licence deregulation. Mr Neary said transport in Christchurch could revert to the “Wild West” days.
New companies could emerge and undercut fares, steal passengers and offer an unsafe service.
The board’s general manager, Mr Max Taylor, said that with taxis also becoming deregu-
lated there would be many more on the road competing with buses. That could hurt C.T.B. patronage.
Mr Neary will work with the Wellington council to see that the simplified system of transport licensing to be introduced is opposed where it is “repugnant” to bus companies and threatens public transport.
