Sir Paul to funeral

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

at Parliament

New Zealand will be represented at the funeral of Emperor Hirohito in Japan next month by the Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, and Lady Reeves. They will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, and probably by a former New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, Mr Rob Miller. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday the Government had confirmed with Sir Paul and Lady Reeves that they would go.

Being represented by the New Zealand formal Head of State is a signal to Japan that the remarks of the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard, do not represent the Government’s view of Japan or Emperor Hirohito. Mr Tizard had said that Emperor Hirohito “should have been tried after World War II and executed as a war criminal.” “Mr Tizard was not considered as New Zealand’s representative to the funeral and I’m sure he wouldn’t wish to be considered,” Mr Lange said.
