Skydiver falls to his death
PA Wellington The Dargaville police say a man was killed late yesterday when his parachute apparently failed to open during a jump. Police and ambulance officers sped to the. scene of the accident 48km north of Dargaville after a member of the public reported seeing the parachutist plummeting to Earth. The witness said a single-engined plane was circling above an area of hillside bush in an effort to guide searchers to the spot where the parachutist landed. Detective Sergeant Jim Goodland said the police had recovered a body near a school about 48km north of Dargaville but investigations were hampered by the distances involved. “The pilot landed in a paddock 10 miles west of where he dropped the body.” The police had not yet managed to contact the pilot of the plane.
