Flood of suspects

PA Auckland Detectives investigating the shooting of the Northcote motelier, Rex Bell, spent yesterday checking more than 20 suspects. The suspects’ names were gathered from a flood of telephone calls after a police reward of up to $20,000 was offered for information leading to conviction of the killers. The Motel Association is hoping to match the police reward. Detective Senior-Sergeant Sam

Hanna, second-in-charge of the inquiry, said yesterday’s efforts produced no firm leads. “I don’t think we have got the name we have been waiting for, although many of them would be capable of doing it,” he said. “But it’s early yet. A lot of people are still on holiday.” Mr Bell, aged 56, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt on December 19 at the Onewa Road motel he owned with his wife, Judith.
