Unity

Sir,—l am glad that John D. Canham (December 9) is sympathetic towards my viewpoint. Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad and other founders of religions taught their followers to love all people, irrespective of religious differences. One holy book warns believers “not to revile those whom others worship besides God lest they, out of spite, revile God in their ignorance.” Gandhi said “that it is the duty of every cultured man or woman to read sympathetically the scriptures of the world. A friendly study of the world’s religions is a sacred duty.” I maintain that an inde-

pendent investigation of the world’s major religions will reveal the similarity of their fundamental teachings. Through meeting with people of different faiths, I have come to recognise the good and God in them and their religion. John D. Canham says that the ultimate uniting power comes from Christ, but I believe that it comes from God.—Yours, etc., TONY BANKS. December 21, 1988.
