Canterbury guide a year in the making

KAY FORRESTER
Errol Brathwaite clocked up several hundred kilometres on Canterbury roads collecting material for the New Zealand Guides “Christchurch, North and Mid-Canterbury” guide released recently. The 176-page guide is one of the first three in a series that will cover all New Zealand. The series is published by the Government Printing Office. The office approached Mr Brathwaite, a Christchurch writer, to prepare the Canterbury volume. He said the book was about 12 months in preparation as he did the research, travelled the roads and worked with the office on the format fenthe euide.
“It was the first one so we rather set the precedent for the other guides.” The guide is intended for overseas tourists who want to make the most of Canterbury’s attractions but also for New Zealanders and particularly Canterbury people. "It is intended as a useful guide to what’s available,” Mr Brathwaite said. The book is divided into regions within the northern and central part of the province, and has a descriptive text followed by a quick reference to all facilities in the area. The book covers the area from Kaikoura to Ashburton. Mr Brathwaite has worked for the Railways, in broadcasting and advertising and in the armed services. He has been a full-time writer for 13 years.
