Cyclone’s impact still expected but delayed

PA Auckland The remnants of tropical Cyclone Eseta are now expected to bring galeforce winds and up to 75mm of rain to Auckland and Northland today — 24 hours later than expected. Forecasters had predicted the rough weather would arrive yesterday but the depression slowed its progress south. Last night campers in Northland were securing tents and arranging alternative accommodation in case of emergency.

A spokesman for the Auckland Weather Centre said up to 75mm of rain would fall in the 36 hours to noon tomorrow accompanied by winds gusting to 45 knots. The storm would be nowhere near the strength of Cyclone Bola, which caused millions of dollars of damage when it swept across the North Island in March.

Strong winds preceding the depression caused problems for crews in an Auckland-Bay of Islands yacht race that finished

yesterday. Ten boats dropped out to take shelter and nine others did not start.

Maureen Cullen, of Kerikeri marine radio, which monitors boats in the race, said many of the entrants had gear broken and sea sickness was common.

However, the strong winds had one positive effect; an unofficial race record was set by the yacht Jesse James, which took line honours in 12h 40min Ils.
