Forsyth looks at insanity

“Housekeeping,” which will start at the- Metro tomorrow, is certainly the oddest film yet from the award-winning Scottish director, Bill Forsyth, whose whimsical comedies, such as “Local Hero,” have long been a staple of film festivals. Forsyth was invited to Canada to make this film, and while it is much more sombre than his previous efforts, it is also his most accomplished. The idea of encroaching insanity within a small, closely-knit family sounds rather glum. But there is nothing downbeat about “Housekeeping.” Apart from Forsyth’s customarily sensitive and unobstrusive direction, “Housekeeping” relies almost entirely upon its acting. The Academy Award nominee, Christine Lahti, it superb as the gently deranged Sylvie.
