Second ‘Govt’ in Vanuatu
NZPA-AAP Port Vila Vanuatu’s President, Ati George Sokomanu, yesterday swore in the rebel politician, Barak Sope, as Prime Minister of a five-man interim Government, which he claimed now ruled the country following his disputed attempt to dissolve Parliament on Friday. The move came despite repeated protests by the Prime Minister, Father Walter Lini, and
the rest of the Parliament that the President had no power to sack them and had therefore acted unconstitutionally and illegally. Four others were also sworn in as Ministers, including a former Opposition leader, Maxine Carlot, who was named as interim Deputy Prime Minister. In Canberra a Foreign Affairs spokesman said Australia will continue to recognise the Government of Father Lini.
