Molesworth station road to open
The road through the high-country station Molesworth will be open to the public from the beginning of January to the end of February. Opening the Hanmer-to-Awatere road to the public was declared a success last year after a twomonth trial period.
But an argument developed afterwards as to who should pick up the bill for the road’s maintenance. During last January and February 3200 visitors travelled through the station in 1200 vehicles. This left the road in “a heck of a mess” with the surface being “right down
to base rock,” said the station manager, Mr Don Reid. Since then, $30,000 has been put up by Electricorp, the Department of Lands, the Ministry for the Environment, and Landcorp, and work is being done on the road now.
To cover further road maintenance costs the fee to drive through Molesworth has been increased to $2O a vehicle. An honesty system will be used to collect the money, but if people do not pay, the road will not be opened in 1990.
