Shearers tested for drugs
PA New Plymouth
The woman who instigated drug screening blood tests for re-cord-breaking shearers at the week-end, an Otorohanga journalist, Margaret Way, says the whole image of the shearing industry is at stake. Ms Way, who is married to the top open shearer, Edsel Ford, was present at Waitanguru on Saturday when blood tests were taken from David Fagan (Te Kuiti) and Alan MacDonald (Piopio), who had set a new world lamb shearing record and a new world twoman team record. She said she had been concerned about the influence of drugs in sporting events since the shock disqualification of Ben Johnson at the Seoul Olympics.
“Wouldn’t it be a horrible thing for them (shearers attempting a world record) to make the effort and then have someone say they were on drugs.” Ms Way said her campaign was not a witch-hunt and she was acting purely as an individual without the backing of any committee.
