Mark Graham retires
PA London
The former New Zealand rugby league captain, Mark Graham, has retired, forced out of the game by a serious shoulder problem, the “Observer” newspaper reports. The big second-rower, aged 33, was just five months into a two-year contract with Wakefield Trinity and made the surprise announcement at the week-end. Graham was recalled to the Kiwi pack for the World Cup matches this year. The final at Eden Park was his twenty-ninth test; he was captain for 18 of them between 1980 and 1986.
Though beset by injuries, the result of the heavy treatment given him by opposing teams, Graham was often rated the code’s top second-row forward during an eight-year career with North Sydney.
