Laser Lad ready for Auckland trip
Special correspondent Invercargill Laser Lad’s win in the Southland Times Cup at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday was heard by one of his Surfer’s Paradise partowners, Graham Calderwood, who had a friend in Invercargill play the commentary over the telephone. Mr Calderwood, a former Invercargill car salesman and generous supporter of harness racing, was delighted with the outcome. Mr Calderwood races Laser Lad in partnership with a Southland, trio, Blair Vickery, Kevit? English and Bill Crawford. They bought the Noodlum
gelding as a young horse from his breeder, Bob Cameron. Peter Jones drove Laser Lad, winner, too, of the race in 1986. Laser Lad surged to the front at the 1600 m, then Jones “stacked up” the seven rivals and sprinted them home from the 800 m in 57.62. It is now on to the Auckland Cup carnival for Laser Lad, which will be flown north on Thursday for the first night on Friday.
“I know how difficult it will be against Luxury Liner, but he should be a good chance at least,” Jones said of Laser Lad’s Auckland Cup prospects.
