Otago victory sharpens mare for Wairio

Miss Madonna is expected to take her place in today’s Wairio Cup, after a game success at Wingatui on Saturday. Her trainer, Cecil Beckett, said that the mare had recovered well after her race and he believes she will improve as a result of her Otago success. “I have until 7.30 a.m. to make a final decision, but my thoughts are that she will run at this stage,” Beckett said last night. A last-minute discussion with owner, Bert Crooks, will decide the issue. Joe Ninety’s latest form has been exemplary and he will be one of the favourites along with Shorty Bijou and Noble Pal.

Knight Invader can only be improved as a result of his first-up run at Ascot Park last month and he should represent too much class for his rivals, the pick of which could be Dark Turbo and Admiral’s Flight.
