An unbeaten century by Ken Bryenton for Heathcote was the highlight of his team’s match against new Brighton at Heathcote Domain.

Bryenton scored his second senior century. His first was against Halswell six weeks ago. Bryenton’s 122 not out was his personal best.

Heathcote declared at 241 for four, giving New Brighton a chase of 238. Time was a barrier however; New Brighton finished the day at 202 for six with Gary McLean and Kelvin Elliffe both batting soundly. Close by at St Leonards Square, Sumner was foortunate enough to bar out a draw. It trailed Upper Riccarton by 26 runs on the first innings; Upper Riccarton added another 219 runs to the tally in its second innings. An opening partnership of 124 runs by Gary Hodder and Chris Dockerell had it off to a good start, and Michael Hawke followed on where Dockerell left off. Hodder scored 98 before being caught by Charlie Cross. Sumner, requiring 246 runs

to win, faltered early, losing three wickets.

A quick 50 by Don Braid, which included six sixes, left Sumner a more respectable chase, but wickets fell steadily. Chris Astle and Dave Boreham, the last two at the wicket, added 41 and saved Sumner. Bowling for Riccarton, Terry Calswell added four wickets to match his four in the first. The two leaders, MerivalePapanui and Halswell, did not give anything away in the match at Halswell Domain. Halswell resumed batting to take the first-innings honours by four runs; these five points could prove valuable at the end of the competition. Merivale-Papanui then declared its second innings, leaving Halswell a chase of 193 runs in 80 minutes and 20 overs. It was not a memorable start for Halswell, which lost wickets early, and it soon realised a win was impossible. At 5.20 p.m. the match was stopped. At Richmond Park, Hornby declared overnight 51 runs ahead of Richmond Working Men’s Club. Robbie Withers led his team by example, finishing undefeated on 78. Withers had strong support from Frank Noster and Phil Trowbridge. The team mustered a solid 252 for eight declared. Hornby, seeking 202 runs in an hour and 50 minutes, was 38 runs short at stumps with three wickets in hand.

Merivale-Papanui remains the leader in the competition with a 10-point margin over

the second-placed Halswell. New Brighton trails two points back. Hornby has overtaken Sumner to lie in fourth place. Sumner, now fifth, heads Heathcote by seven points; Upper Riccarton is next, and Richmond W.M.C. holds the bottom card.
