Air New Zealand has been awarded a $1 million contract to do maintenance work on six Qantas Rolls-Royce jet engines.
The “medium” checks on the combustion chambers and high pressure turbines of the Boeing 747 RB2II engines will be done at Air New Zealand’s Auckland engineering base. Qantas has had a surge in maintenance work in its own workshops at Mascot because of the increasing number and use of aircraft.
The airline’s general manager, operations, Captain Alan Terrell, said sending the engines to New Zealand would allow Qantas to ease the workload in its own workshops and enable it to continue to fulfil long-term maintenance contracts with other airlines without disruption.
Qantas expects its fleet to expand to 62 aircraft within the next five years, and is likely to enter further contracts for maintenance work to be done by Air New Zealand.
