Councillor hits at Kiwi Sport

The Hillary Commission’s ambitious Kiwi Sport campaign running in schools throughout the country was criticised by a Christchurch City councillor last evening. Cr Clive Cotton, chairman of the parks and recreation committee, said some pupils would be disadvantaged because their schools could not afford to pay for the modified sports equipment used on the scheme. “The Hillary Commission should be paying for the equipment. Some schools just don’t have the

money to be able to do it,” he said. Cr Cotton was responding to a presentation by Sport Kiwi at last evening’s parks and recreation meeting. Sixty per cent of schools in New Zealand have registered for the scheme which encourages pupils to take up sport at an early age. A Sport Kiwi spokesman, Peter Sharp, agreed the Hillary Commission had not addressed the problem, but said service clubs should be able to help if schools could not afford equipment.
