Ritchie helps side to 12-run win

Special correspondent

A cornerstone innings of 69 from the senior Wellington batsman, Tim Ritchie, helped his side to a 12-run win over Canterbury in a limited overs cricket match at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Ritchie gave his team momentum after an unsteady start, was unbeaten on 69 at the close and carried the home side to 199 for six, a total Canterbury was unable to surpass. The Sydenham all-roun-der, Richard Petrie, breathed life into Canterbury’s ultimately fruitless run-chase, scoring 37 before being bowled by, Jonathan Millmow in the forty-ninth over. Petrie joined Chris Flanagan, Lee Germon and Andrew Nuttall in minor, late-order partnerships which carried Canterbury within reach of victory. But time and a growing required run-rate acted against them and their final wickets fell in a slog over the final three overs.

Stu Roberts, Flanagan and the spinner, Nuttall, contained Wellington early and after 25 of its 50 overs, it was only 68 for three. Its 100 came Up in the thirty-fifth over as Nuttall bowled his 10 overs for 27 runs.

The former international medium-pacer, Derek Stirling, scored 31 in even time to lift Wellington’s run rate and to add 59 with Ritchie for their fifth wicket. That innings and partnership changed the direction of the match.

Canterbury’s top order showed shaky resistance to Wellington’s principally pace attack and it was in trouble at the fall of its third wicket. Pete Kennedy was out at 17, Paul McEwan at 24 and Rod Latham at 44 in the sixteenth over. Blair Hartland steadied the innings, reaching 32 before being stumped by the Wellington captain, Ervin McSweeney, from the bowling of the leftarm spinner, Brett Williams. Dave Farrant and Priest added 51 for Canterbury’s fifth wicket but their dismissals in quick succession were mortal blows. Petrie did his best to keep Canterbury on target for victory but, after hitting three fours in succession from the forty-first over, bowled by young left-armer, Steve Hotter, he saw the innings flag. Canterbury needed 30 runs from the final five overs, 22 from the final three and 18, with two

wickets standing, from the final two. The chase ended when Petrie and Nuttall were out to the first and fourth balls of the forty-ninth over. WELLINGTON R. Verry b Flanagan.... 9 G.
