Kiwi women thrash the Netherlands

NZPA-AAP Sydney New Zealand’s women cricketers, inspired by a century from the opener Nicki Turner, yesterday thrashed the Netherlands by 210 runs in a World Cup cricket match at the North Sydney Oval. The Kiwis scored 297 for five from their 60 overs while the Dutch could only manage 87 in 51 overs. The tally was the highest in World Cup oneday matches and probably an international record in women’s cricket.

Canterbury’s Turner cracked 114 in 180 minutes, including 10 boundaries. Her opening partner, Jackie Clark, of Central Districts, contributed 85 and the pair put on 167 for the first wicket. Debbie Hockley (North Shore) hit 56 in just over even time, including four boundaries.

The chief destroyers among the New Zealand bowlers were the recently arrived Cathy Campbell, who flew in on Saturday

to replace the injured Nancy Williams (dislocated shoulder). Campbell took three for 27 and the St Albans medium pacer, Brigit Legg, two for 13. Today England plays Ireland at North Sydney No. 1 while Australia flies to Canberra to prepare for the clash with the resurgent Kiwis on Wednesday. Australia scored an equally emphatic win over Ireland on North Sydney’s other oval yesterday. Spearheaded by the world’s fastest women bowlers, New South Wales’ Sally Griffiths and Victorian Karen Brown, Australia trounced Ireland by 10 wickets in a onesided affair. The tourists could only manage 78 for eight. NEW ZEALAND N. Turner b Venturini 114 J. Clark b Loman 85 D. Hockley c Koppe b Grevers 56 S. Illingworth b van Lier 0 B. Legg c Koppe b Venturini 7
