Saxton steels himself to win

Special correspondent Dunedin Roland Saxton, the Gore apprentice jockey, displayed extra skill to win the Ashley Powell Memorial Handicap on Sea Chick at the Beaumont Racing Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Saturday after breaking an iron early in the race.

Saxton’s off side iron (made of aluminium) began to give way near the 800 metres in the 1200metre race and within 100 metres had broken completely, leaving him without a hold for his right foot. Sea Chick was then back in the field after drifting early. "I just grabbed the mane and leaned to one side to keep my balance,” said Saxton, who brought

Sea Chick with a strong finish to score by a head. Lara Pinta was second after trailing the favourite, Picable, in the lead.

Highway Boy fell at the 350 metres when in the middle of a close running field and his rider, Gabrielle Foote, took a heavy fall. She was taken to hospital with a chest injury.

Saxton, aged 20, has ridden 40 winners since he transferred to Sea Chick’s trainer, Rex Cochrane, 13 months ago. He had 21 wins on his record when he came south from Laurie Laxon’s Cambridge stable.

His broken iron was inspected by the stipendiary stewards and found to be in reasonable order.
