Cadet scheme in deficit

The North Canterbury Farm Cadet Scheme is facing a $7OOO deficit this financial year. Mr Nigel Barnett, the chairman of the Farm Cadet Board, said the shortfall was partly caused by a reduction in funding as a result of a drop-off in cadet numbers during the year. He said the board had been forced to stop paying for some meeting expenses and was planning to draw money from its training reserve. Consideration is being given to amalgamating the North Canterbury, South Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury farm cadet boards as another way of cutting costs. Mr Barnett said a group of cadets in the • North Island had approached the Dairy Board for additional funding. The board had offered a sum which would give each cadet $5OO more towards their training. Federated Farmers’ Dominion Council said recently that after 24 years it was time do review the cadet scheme and regional cadet committees should make recommendations to the council.
