Cat causes power cut An adventurous cat caused a power cut on almost all of Ashburton’s east side for six minutes yesterday morning. The cat, Charlie, scaled a pole on William Street, and climbed through an 11,000 volt terminal. Ashburton Electric Power Board staff decided they could not get the cat down without turning off the power. Driver electrocuted A driver died when his truck touched powerlines while he was unloading grain at a farm near Oxford yesterday. He was Mark Thomas Stevenson, aged 31, of Oamaru. Motor-cyclist hurt A teen-age motor-cyclist was hurt when he collided with a truck in Reserve Road, Waikuku, about 9 a.m. yesterday. The youth, aged 15, suffered moderate leg and arm injuries. He was in a comfortable condition later in Christchurch Hospital. Climbing huts burgled The St Andrew’s College climbing huts at Castle Hill, near Porters Pass, were broken into during the last week. A rear window was smashed. A video recorder and climbing ropes were taken. Medical open night An open night to discuss medical research in Canterbury will be held in Ashburton this evening. Doctors and scientists from the Christchurch School of Medicine will be at the meeting, in the Holyoake Auditorium at Ashburton College at 8 p.m. The dean of the Christchurch School of Medicine, Professor Alan Clarke, will be chairman.
