Trackwork Lucca shows form for Waipukurau

Special correspondent Palmerston North Lucca, a good third at the recent Rangitikei meeting, showed his fitness for Waipukurau tomorrow when he completed a smart gallop at Awapuni yesterday morning. Lucca has been racing well and is one of five horses Chris McNab will parade at the meeting. Galloping on the inside trial, which provided firm footing, Lucca and Zamaliza ran from the 800 m in 50, the last 600 m in 37 with Lucca just in front. Erin Jillings will ride the team tomorrow with Lucca one of the best chances. Old Pirate, engaged in the highweight at Waipukurau, covered 1000 m in 1:3.4, the last

600 m in 37.4. He ran a fair race at Wanganui last Saturday and is on the improve, though the field tomorrow is unusually strong. Lutece is another engaged in the highweight. Yesterday she worked impressively with Fernoon, running 800 m in 50, the last 600 m in 37. Lutece has been disappointing in her last few starts, but if she raced up to her best she could go well. Fernoon, another in at Waipukurau, disappointed at Levin. He is capable of a better effort. Stroll On was impressive when running 1000 m in 1:1.5, the last 600 m in 38. He raced well at Riccarton and has held his form since in preparation for Waipukurau.

Sir Lotto, which does not race until Otaki, ran 800 m in 51, the last 600 m in 38, while Mr Hawk ran home 1000 m in 1:9.5, the final 600 m in 39.5. Sir Lotto looks an early winner. Mr Milson, a top chance against the stayers tomorrow after a bold run at Levin, was never at top when running 1600 m in 1:56, the last 600 m in 42. He is very fit. Dutch Lady sped over 600 m in 37, and Zephyrmint ran her last 600 m in 38. She looks at her best for Waipukurau though she disappointed a little on her southern trip. Midnite Action, which will be ridden by Larry Cassidy in the last at Waipukurau, was timed over 800 m in 52.
