I1 Comandante looks to have measure of rivals

Special correspondent Invercargill Il Comandante, although something of a day-to-day proposition, could still have the measure of his rivals in the Andrew Housing Handicap, the feature flat race at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting today. The Zamazaan entire, a winner at the club’s meeting last month, has not raced since finishing a fair fifth on hard ground over 1600 metres on the first day of the Cup carnival at Riccarton. A winner of the Southland Guineas on the course, Il Comandante, which also won the last Dunedin Cup, may represent too much class for what is a moderate field of stayers. He showed great courage in bad ground when he resumed on a winning note on the course last month. Catential, the runner-up to Joe Ninety on the first day, could be his biggest danger. Last season’s Riverton Cup runner-up is poised to gain an overdue win at Invercargill. Alberjon was not well-served in the running on the first day and deserves another chance. Black Arrow’s first-day run was well below par. His lead up form, including his Gore Cup win, suggests he deserves another chance. My Wee Man, a battling fourth on the first day, would need to show little improvement to pay a dividend. For longer odds, the lightweights, Vamos A Beber and Sovereign Court, make some appeal. Vamos A Beber was not disgraced when a respectable fifth in the Blenheim Road Motor Inn Plate at Riccarton 10 days ago. Sovereign Court, a striking son of Sovereign Red, has been a find .of the lower grade staying ranks this season and should not be embarrassed by the sharp rise in class. Rakahooka Looka, a winner at Gore last month and placed at Riccarton over the Cup carnival, is ideal material for the 1400 metres of the Animal Remedies Supplies Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.
