Operation Ice Cube
Operation Ice Cube, the R.N.Z.A.F.’s annual summer support programme in the Antarctic, is scheduled to begin today with the first of 14 Hercules flights from Christchurch. The Hercules of 40 Squadron will be carrying passengers and cargo to support the New Zealand and United States Antarctic science programmes. American Star Lifters and Hercules also fly to the Ice during the Octo-ber-February summer season and about 1600 tonnes of cargo and 2000 Antarctic workers will pass through the base at Christchurch International Airport by the end of the season.
