Sport, medicine
Sir, —W. Rosenberg is wrong to ascribe East Germany’s comparative success in the Olympic Games to high standards of medical care. In reality, medical care for the East German “proletariat” is pitiful, as it is in all communist countries. In fact, it would be better to speak of veterinary care, as the Communist authorities treat their people more like animals than human beings. East Germany breeds athletes like we breed race horses. In the Eastern Bloc promising athletes are selected in schools and given extensive training. In their late teens they are drafted into the army and spend virtually their whole time training as professional sportsmen and women. New Zealand can be rightly proud of its sporting men and women. East Germany can only be proud of its fine “racehorses.” — Yours, etc T. R. LOUDEN. October 6, 1988.
