Making a safe drug-free neighbourhood
The Woolston community has set up a project to develop programmes catering for the young people of the area. According to its two full-time co-ordina-tors, Marty Minhinnick and Dave Green, the Woolston Development Project aims to establish a “safe, drug-free environment” where young people can develop their potential in an atmosphere of positive peer pressure. Two public meetings were held recently, with members of the local community expressing enthusiasm about the idea. They agreed that there were very few activities young people in Woolston to take part in, especially in the evenings. The project is being co-ordinated from the former Alcohol Liquor Advisory Council building in Ferry Road. A steering committee, comprising representatives from social and community agencies and interested residents, has been formed to help get it off the ground.
