Farewell for scout leader
A presentation will be made to retiring Mt Pleasant scout leader Denis O’Rourke this Friday in recognition of his more than 20 years on the job. He began as a scout leader in 1967 and built up a large land scout group of 36 boys, the maximum allowed under scouting rules. In the 1970 s it developed into the only troop in the world to have land, sea and air scouts. Because the interest in land and air scouts lessened, it has recently been entirely a sea scout troop.
As secretary/treasurer of the Canterbury area sea scout committee for many years, Denis was responsible for the distinctive sea scout uniform, designing the badge for New Zealand sea scouts,
and introducing seamanship.
He became a venturer leader as well as scout leader at Mt Pleasant two years ago. He was also secretary treasurer of the group. Cinerama Young “clutterbugs” are being invited to gather up their old “clutter, stuff and things" to sell at the Cinerama Youth Centre this Saturday. The great clutter clearance begins at 12 noon and young people can have their own site for $3. Telephone 665-136 for enquiries or site bookings. A “Mega bad taste party” will be held at the Youth Centre from 7.30 p.m. to midnight this Friday. As an incentive to really search out really revolting items in the back of the wardrobe, prizes will be awarded for the most tasteless get-up. On Friday, October 21, from 7 p.m. to 10.45 p.m., there will be a special party to celebrate the opening of the Friday Night Spot Cafe at the centre.
There will be a special showing of “Roadshow” at the centre today for young people out of work. It begins at 2 p.m., with no charge for admittance.
